A Fresh Start on the Water

Sometimes, a fresh start is exactly what’s needed—and that’s just what these homeowners set out to create. They purchased a 1960s-era home on a one-acre waterfront peninsula, drawn not to the house itself—which was small and outdated—but to the incredible setting, complete with mature oak trees and panoramic water views.

When plans for the new build began, the homeowners were eager to preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible. Although several oak trees had to be removed to make space, much of the wood was saved and later incorporated into the home's design. Architect Tom Retnauer of RBA Architects thoughtfully designed the home to celebrate and reflect its natural surroundings.

The result is a home that’s both functional and serene. The second-floor primary suite includes a private deck with sweeping views of the water and surrounding wildlife. A custom headboard in the primary bedroom, crafted from the reclaimed oak, serves as a meaningful reminder of the property’s roots. Upstairs, there are two additional bedrooms for visiting grandchildren and a finished room over the garage, perfect for a home office or flex space.

Looking ahead, the first-floor guest suite—with its en suite bath and walk-in closet—is designed to become the owners’ primary bedroom if needed in the future. For added convenience, the home includes washer and dryer setups on both the first and second floors, making laundry access easy no matter where you are.

The salvaged oak makes multiple appearances throughout the home—in the fireplace mantel, staircase handrails, the tray ceiling of the breakfast nook, and other custom details that give the home character and continuity. A wide-open den leads to a covered back porch through double sliding glass doors, with a bluestone floor that ties seamlessly into the stone skirting along the home’s foundation.

A two-car garage includes a rear roll-up door and charging station for a golf cart, blending practicality with thoughtful design in this carefully curated forever home.
